{"id":560,"date":"2017-05-15T04:11:53","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T08:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athenainstitute.com\/ahp\/?p=560"},"modified":"2017-05-16T14:07:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T18:07:05","slug":"inspired-by-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.athenainstitute.com\/ahp\/inspired-by-the-end\/","title":{"rendered":"inspired by the end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What does dying look like<br \/>\nor dying well<br \/>\nor living well<br \/>\nare they two separate things?<br \/>\ni would guess that it is one process<br \/>\nthat we are choosing how we will die now<\/p>\n<p>we seem to pick paths<br \/>\nwithout evidence<br \/>\nwithout RHYME without REASON<\/p>\n<p>and if that is true<br \/>\nwhat should we do<br \/>\nwhat should we be doing in our life<br \/>\nwhat should we expect in our death<\/p>\n<p>The world presents itself<br \/>\nslowly unfolding<br \/>\n(the amount of it that we see)<br \/>\ndata trickles in through our senses<br \/>\nBut no one can escape the boundaries of perception<br \/>\nno one can penetrate past what is available<\/p>\n<p>the END is intangible, illusive<br \/>\nit defies conceptualization<br \/>\nit resists acknowledgement<\/p>\n<p>the cacophony of color<br \/>\nthe tyranny of noise<br \/>\nthe onslaught of smells<br \/>\nthe barrage of flavors<br \/>\nthe blankets of tactile sensation<br \/>\nassaults our interior world<br \/>\nin the years before death<br \/>\nthe body decays<br \/>\nso do the memories<br \/>\nthe dreams are mostly dead<br \/>\ndoes the pain remain?<br \/>\ndo rose-colored glasses render mountainous disasters into mole-hills?<br \/>\ni hope so<\/p>\n<p>would a turing test run on a baby or a terminal patient?<br \/>\nwhat\u2019s your home, baby?<\/p>\n<p>are you from another world?<\/p>\n<p>did i know you?<br \/>\ndo i know you?<br \/>\ncan i know you?<\/p>\n<p>in a car, staring out the window, you see other cars<\/p>\n<p>where is everyone going?<br \/>\nthey travel fast.<br \/>\na girl, squashed between two bookshelves, cranes her neck to see a book on the top shelf<br \/>\nwhat is she looking for?<br \/>\na book, for a section, for a question, for a citation, for a paper, for a class, for a degree, for an education, for a career, for a life, a whole life &#8211; made up of what<\/p>\n<p>are we going for the same thing?<\/p>\n<p>unified pursuit<br \/>\nof happiness<br \/>\nof truth<\/p>\n<p>what did we want then,<\/p>\n<p>to be gods? not just men?<\/p>\n<p>~from Apotheosis Wikipedia entry~<\/p>\n<p>can we know everything?<\/p>\n<p>can you describe a leaf to me<br \/>\ncan you give me a unified theory of leaves<br \/>\nall there is to know about leaves<br \/>\neverything about leaves<br \/>\neach vein, all veins<br \/>\nthe pigment<br \/>\ncan you predict its life span<br \/>\ncan you classify its shape<br \/>\ncan you eradicate its poisonous genes<br \/>\ncan you document its variation<br \/>\ncan you measure the diameter of its stem<br \/>\nits caloric content<br \/>\ncan you number its chloroplasts<br \/>\ncan you inspect its mitochondria<\/p>\n<p>why are they supposed to look like this: but a fancy camera takes a picture like this<\/p>\n<p>that\u2019s a leaf:<\/p>\n<p>depends on the camera<\/p>\n<p>why are there trees everywhere?<\/p>\n<p>why are we so incredibly incomplete<br \/>\ninsatiable<br \/>\nunsatisfied<\/p>\n<p>waiting, becoming, not arriving<\/p>\n<p>uncertainty<\/p>\n<p>not arriving &#8211; Beckett<\/p>\n<p>reading books in high school = our intellectual tradition<\/p>\n<p>what is traditional hope<br \/>\nwhere do we go future aim shoot try intend<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does dying look like or dying well or living well are they two separate things?
