Although I have not received a patient and didn’t have the opportunity to interact with a patient, I feel as though I learned so much and grew a lot when it came to topics surrounding death and grief.

Death. When someone you’ve known dies, and that person was so close to you, it feels like a part of you has also died. You formed a connection so close with that person that, for a moment, it feels like the world stopped moving for a moment. Sometimes people blame themselves for their loved one’s death, but there was really nothing to stop it. And for me, an individual’s death reminds me that some things are not meant to last forever, and that’s okay because that is what life is about. And eventually, everybody will have to meet the fate of dying.

A valuable idea I was able to reflect on was grief. I thought grief was a timed thing, but grief is a rather strange thing. When my loved one died, I thought it was 3 days, and it was over. But that is not the case. I could be writing something, and out of the blue, I remember someone who died, and I will start crying. During this time, I needed to learn to be patient with myself and heal. Without healing, can I really take a step forward and comfort and reassure others who might be facing the end of life?

And during this time, I was able to learn more about myself, such as how I would approach certain scenarios of death and how I can comfort someone who has just lost someone. The most crucial thing I learnt is to let that person grieve and not to say words that will stop them from grieving properly.

I would describe this experience as life-changing for a medical school application. I feel as though, as someone who is going into the medical field, death should be a topic I shouldn’t be afraid of discussing, but rather something I should be comfortable doing.

My journey doesn’t end here.
