DECIDING ON THE SURGERY YOU WILL HAVE: Depending on the disease or condition that is being addressed, a woman and her surgeon can explore together the several surgical options available [each option is illustrated]. Myomectomy, sometimes referred to as "reconstructive" surgery, which removes only the diseased portion of the uterus, preserving most of the organ. Subtotal hysterectomy, or supravaginal hysterectomy, in which the cervix is retained within the body. Total hysterectomy, which removes the entire uterus, including the cervix, but retains the ovaries. Total hysterectomy plus tubes and ovaries, technically known as hyterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ovariectomy.
Consider Myomectomy: A myomectomy removes the diseased portion of the uterus, usually a fibroid tumor, a group of fibroids, or other growths. The surgeon then reconstructs the remaining uterus into as nearly normal a uterine tissue as can be salvaged. By reconstructing the uterus, rather than simply removing it, one has a high likelihood of preserving normal uterine function. Thus the glandular secretions of the endometrial lining (such as the beta endorphins), lubrication and prostaglandins from the cervix, and other as yet unknown functions can continue as before.
